How Much Pay Will I Take Home After Taxes?

Take-home pay is what remains after taxes and payroll deductions come out of gross pay. Gross pay is the salary or wage you earn. Take-home pay is the amount that actually reaches your bank account.

A useful estimate separates taxes into layers: federal income tax, Social Security, Medicare, state and local income tax, pre-tax deductions, and any extra withholding. Self-employed workers also need to account for self-employment tax instead of employee FICA withholding.

Step 1: Start With Gross Pay

Gross pay is your salary or wages before taxes. If you are paid hourly, multiply your hourly rate by paid hours. If you are salaried, divide annual salary by your pay periods to estimate each paycheck.

For annual planning, use annual gross income. For paycheck planning, use gross pay per paycheck and apply deductions that happen each pay period.

Step 2: Estimate Federal Income Tax

Federal income tax depends on taxable income, filing status, deductions, and credits. For 2026, IRS Rev. Proc. 2025-32 lists a $16,100 standard deduction for single filers and $32,200 for married couples filing jointly.

The U.S. tax system is progressive. That means only the income inside each bracket is taxed at that bracket rate. A raise into the 22% bracket does not make all your income taxed at 22%.

Step 3: Subtract Social Security and Medicare

Employees generally pay 6.2% Social Security tax up to the annual wage base and 1.45% Medicare tax on wages. IRS Publication 15-A lists the 2026 Social Security wage base as $184,500 and confirms there is no wage base limit for Medicare tax.

High earners may also owe Additional Medicare Tax. Employers withhold an extra 0.9% Medicare tax on wages above $200,000, though the final threshold depends on filing status when you file your return.

Example Calculation

Single filer earning $85,000 in 2026, taking the standard deduction, before state tax and benefit deductions.

  2. Standard deduction: $16,100
  3. Taxable income: $68,900
  4. Federal income tax: $9,870
  5. Social Security tax: $85,000 x 6.2% = $5,270
  6. Medicare tax: $85,000 x 1.45% = $1,232.50
  7. Estimated after federal income tax and FICA: $68,627.50

Before state tax and payroll deductions, this worker keeps about $68,628 of $85,000. Actual take-home pay may be lower after state tax, health insurance, retirement contributions, and other deductions.

Step 4: Add State Taxes and Deductions

State income tax can change the result significantly. Some states have no wage income tax, while others use progressive brackets or flat rates. Local income tax may also apply in some cities or counties.

  • Pre-tax 401(k), HSA, and health insurance deductions usually reduce federal taxable wages.
  • Roth 401(k) contributions do not reduce current taxable income.
  • Post-tax deductions reduce take-home pay but usually do not reduce taxable wages.
  • Tax credits reduce tax directly, but simple paycheck estimates often omit them.

Self-Employed Take-Home Pay

Self-employed workers do not have an employer withholding tax from each paycheck. Instead, they estimate income tax and self-employment tax, then usually pay quarterly. The self-employment tax calculation starts with net profit, applies the 92.35% adjustment, and then applies Social Security and Medicare rates.

Do Not Spend Gross Revenue

A freelancer receiving a $5,000 client payment has not earned $5,000 of spendable money. Business expenses, self-employment tax, income tax, and state tax may all come out of that payment.

Why Paycheck Withholding Can Differ From Your Estimate

Your paycheck withholding depends on Form W-4, payroll frequency, bonuses, multiple jobs, dependents, and extra withholding elections. A take-home pay estimate is a planning tool, not a guarantee that your refund or balance due will be zero.

If your tax situation changes during the year, update your W-4 or estimated payments. Common triggers include a raise, new freelance income, marriage, divorce, a second job, a new child, large investment gains, or moving to another state.
